What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is the practice of pausing to pay attention to what matters most in life in the presence of another. It’s taking time to reflect on your relationship with your sources of joy, inspiration, and meaning with someone who will witness, encourage, and challenge you along the way.

Spiritual Direction is practiced in all spiritual traditions with many names and different emphasis. The presence of another interrupts habitual patterns and creates opportunities for insight that are harder to achieve alone.

Whether called a spiritual director, spirit friend, soul friend, anam cara, Kalyāṇa-mittatā, or something else, a spiritual witness is a mirror that allows a person to know themselves better in their full humanity.

There is something about feeling “seen” that is transformative, whether it’s just a shift in mood, or a fundamental change in self-understanding. Maybe what is most transformative is just being seen often and thoroughly enough to feel enough. I love being part of those moments, for myself and for others.

And I want more of us to have more of those moments in the world.

Here are some types of people who come to me to be witnessed:

• People who want to tapping into their authenticity and joy to power a love-centered life.
• People who do a lot of caring for others, including spiritual care professionals, who need to nurture their own spirit.
• People with big responsibilities and little time for their own needs who want clarity for moving towards what matters most.
• People who straddle worlds who want to hear the wisdom of their whole selves.
